Diamond lace pattern and reinforced heel. Knit from the cuff-down. For dyers, these hand knit socks could be dyed as desired, since about 400 yards of Size 5 perle cotton yarn (also called 5/2 perle; 24-26 wpi) is used although any yarn matching the knit gauge could be used.

The hand knit lace pattern gives these socks plenty of elasticity, which can be a bit lacking in some hand knit cotton socks. Information included for adapting to personal fit.

Knit gauge in stockinette stitch is 9 stitches and 14 rows per inch on size 1 US needles. The soles are knit in stockinette stitch, producing a tight enough gauge that no purl stitches are felt underfoot, as with some heavier weight, looser knit cotton yarns. (of course, sole area could be reversed, if desired)

I wear clogs most of the time since, sadly, I have square feet. During the winter, I have fun mixing pairs of colored hand knit socks on my feet for extra warmth, extending the cuff of the underneath pair of socks to peek above the outer pair of socks. Below, left, is one way of wearing this hand knit lace sock layered over a “regular” pair of maroon socks. Some people get their kicks from jewelry. I get mine from hand knit socks - - and combinations of them!
