DESIGN NOTES
I fell in love with the Royal Quilting Stitch and knit my toddler a cardigan out of it, making up the pattern as I went along. The sweater turned out lovely to look at, but getting it on my daughter is another story. The Royal Quilting Stitch, knit as written in Barbra Walker’s First Treasury, results in 5-stitch long floats every 4 rows on the inside of the garment. These floats are the perfect length for snagging little baby fingers (or adult fingers!) while dressing, and also happen to be the perfect length for toddlers to grab at and pull while bored in their car seats. And if I were to make something for myself, I didn’t want to knit a cowl with such a beautiful pattern on one side, only for it to be ruined by earring-catching, finger-snapping floats on the reverse.

To remedy that, I figured out a way to knit the Royal Quilting stitch in the round without floats on the wrong side. It is a bit tricky at first – you’ll need to do some finger gymnastics – but it is both addictive and beautiful.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
As written, the finished infinity scarf measures 48 inches around and 8.5 inches wide. This size uses nearly all of a skein of DK weight yarn for the background (Color B) and a little more than half of a skein of the edging/diamond-making yarn (Color A). Cast on numbers are given for numerous gauges in 24-72 inch lengths.

MATERIALS
Yarn: 1 skein each Alisha Goes Around Pulchritude of Peacocks DK (80/10/10 Superwash Merino/Cashmere/Nylon, 230 yards per 3.5 ounce skein) in colorways Coy (edging and diamonds) and Nuclear Violet (background)

Needles: Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular knitting needle, 24 or more inches in length, or size needed to obtain gauge (although gauge isn’t super important as long as the knit fabric is to your liking.) Size 6 circular knitting needle, 24 or more inches in length, or one size smaller than your gauge-achieving needle.

Stitch marker, scissors, tapestry needle.
