Dia is short for Diane.
After a few years of being a widower, my dad met and married a wonderful lady named Diane. She was so excited to step into a grandmother role for my son as her kids had not become parents themselves yet. Diane asked if it would be alright if our son called her “Dia” instead of Grandma as she had always pictured being called Dia by future grandkids. Our son took to the name and they quickly became known as Papa and Dia.
