The Digby Hat is a riff on the fisherman’s rib (1/2 brioche or tuck stitch) worked with a cable motif inspired by fisherman’s sweaters and a family vacation driving across Nova Scotia. The Fisherman’s rib is very elastic creating a stretchy toque with extra deep ribbing to fold over for double warmth against cold wind.

18” around x 11” long

YARN
Approximately 160 yards Aran weight yarn. Shown in Custom Woolen Mill, Mule Spinner 2-Ply 100% Rambouillet, 217 yards (198 meters) per 112 grams (3.95 onces): #110 Forest Green Heather, 1 skein.

NEEDLES and NOTIONS
16” circular needles, sizes 6 (4 mm) and 8 (5 mm)
1 set (4) double pointed needles (dpn) size 8 (5 mm)
or size to obtain gauge

1 marker for beginning of round, tapestry needle for weaving in.

GAUGE
16 sts and 20 rows = 4” in pattern st on larger needles
12 stitch x 16 row pattern repeat = 3” x 2 1/2”
Adjust needle size to achieve gauge.

Notes: The hat shown, features a tubular cast on. If using a tubular cast on, for a nice neat edge work the cast on with a needle 3 or 4 sizes smaller then the rib needle. Change to the 16” needle 2 sizes smaller then the gauge needle to work the first round.
If you prefer not to use a tubular cast on, use the needle 2 sizes smaller then the gauge needle and cast on using the long tail method or your preferred firm but stretchable cast on.

If a Beanie style hat is preferred, work the ribbing for 1” and only 140-160 yards of yarn would be required.
