Diggin' Holes
Well, I ought to be working in a coal mine
Neck deep in black lung soot
Swinging a pick at that mountain side
Halfway to China, I think I would
Fit right in where the sun don’t shine
She’s better off alone
Yeah I ought to be working in a coal mine
Lord knows I’m good at digging holes.
(lyrics taken from Brent Cobb’s song “Diggin’ Holes”)
Diggin’ Holes is a triangular shawl, worked sideways, starting at the bottom. The shape is reached by decreases on one side. For the hole pattern panel, charts and written instructions are given.
In the original version, the hole pattern panel uses one strand of the main yarn only. For the garter stitch section, the main yarn and the lace yarn are held together.
There are numerous other possibilities for this pattern: Using two contrasting colors for hole panel and the garter stitch section, working the garter stitch section in a gradient or self-striping yarn etc…
If you prefer a fingering weight, you will need yardage as follows: Color 1 (Hole pattern panel): 363 yds / 332 m, Color 2 (Garter stitch section): 240 yds / 220 m.
