Dimension is an example of how magical knitting can be: just two simple stitch patterns produce such a rich, fascinating texture! The stitch patterns are easy to memorize, and the lofty fabric makes the finished scarf especially cozy.

This rectangular scarf begins and ends with a border of garter ribbing. I-cords are worked along both edges throughout. In the body of the scarf, ribbing sections alternate with cabled sections. Because the cables are created with elongated stitches, they can easily be worked without a cable needle (a link to a video tutorial is included).

Instructions are provided for both DK-weight and aran-weight yarn. But you can use ANY weight yarn and knit to ANY measurements to achieve the look you want. Just follow the tips for adjusting the width when you cast on, then bind off when you are happy with the length.

Instructions are fully written with optional charts.

Measurements using DK-weight yarn:
Length: 78”/198 cm
Width: 9”/23 cm

Measurements using aran-weight yarn:
Length: 74”/188 cm
Width: 9.5”/24 cm

Instructions for customizing width and length are provided. Please note that any changes will affect the yardage required.

DK-weight gauge: 18 stitches and 25 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 6/4 mm needle.

Aran-weight gauge: 16 stitches and 24 rows = 4”/10 cm square in stockinette stitch using US 8/5 mm needle.

Gauge is not crucial for this project, but will affect yardage and finished size if different from above.

Yarn:

DK weight: Approximately 575 yd/526 m; shown in Miss Babs Killington in Herbalist (green).
OR
Aran weight: Approximately 650 yd/595 m; shown in Katia Concept Cotton Merino in color #127 (pale blue).

A different weight yarn may be substituted; this will affect yardage and needle size.
