Dinghy regatta
This easy summer shirt/ tunic is worked top-down, beginning with separate saddle shoulders pieces from which stitches are picked up. The small stripes in 5 contrast colors (the “dinghies” sailing in the water) are worked on the body only, sparing the sleeves.
On the lower body, stripes are worked within the Garter sideline sections only and then on back hem. The hem is split, with the front a few cm shorter than the back.
The knitting process is not too complicated, yet not boring because of the stripes.
Yarn & gauge
Needles: Main needle size is 3,0mm (for yarns like linen or cotton with little elasticity; 3,25mm for wool); 2,5mm needle for Garter and edges.
25 sts x 36 rowsin Stockinette, 25 sts x 50 rows in Garter.
Approx. 700/ 800/ 900/ 1000/ 1100 m (shirt length) or 800/ 900/ 1000/ 1100/ 1200 m (tunic length) of a (Light) Fingering weight needed for main color (MC), plus scraps of 5 contrast colors (CCs), 15-25m each.
Yarn ideas
For my sample, I have used a yarn from Japan called “Hamanaka Flax Tw”. It reminds me of Isager Bomulin (75% cotton, 25% linen, 210m/ 50 g) which I have used for the stripes, in colors 58, 62, 40, 01. Sandnes Tynn Line (50% cotton, 33% rayon, 14% linen, 220m/ 50g), the yarn for the light blue stripe, would also work well, or GGH Reva (recycled yarn with 95% cotton, 5% other).
Or, if you don’t mind a bit of wool, Skudderia Pinta or Forest or any sock yarn will be a great choice, too.
Measurements
5 sizes available: S, M, L, XL, XXL (with bust sizes 88, 96, 104, 112, 120 cm)
Worked at a gauge of 23 sts, the shirt will become approx. one size bigger.
