Dino Balaclava – Beate Balaclalva Modification
Transform your Beate Balaclava or Beate Balaclava Mini into a dinosaur balaclava with this pattern modification!
These instructions explain how to knit three-dimensional dinosaur plates, which are knitted onto the top of the head and down the back of the balaclava.
The pattern modification also includes instructions, for creating the bumps/horns on each side of the spikes for some extra dino-feel.
The balaclava shown in the photos is knitted in a brushed suri alpaca yarn for the balaclava, and a cotton/silk yarn for the dino spikes.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not the knitting pattern for the balaclava itself, it is the instructions for modifying your Beate Balaclava into a dinosaur inspired balaclava – by adding the dino plates/spikes and bumps.
You can find the pattern for the Beate Balaclava Mini itself here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/beate-balaclava-...
Or for the adult sized Beate Balaclava here: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/beate-balaclava
The spikes can be added to any knitted hat, balaclava, or bonnet, but please note that this modification is written and scaled for the Beate Balaclava patterns. Adding them to the original pattern will ensure you achieve the exact look shown in the photos.
I cannot guarantee that this modification will work or look the same on other balaclava patterns, especially the instructions for adding the bumps.
YARN AND GAUGE
26 sts / 10 cm on 2 mm needles
The gauge is not super important, a smaller/bigger gauge will simply result in bigger or smaller spikes.
You only need a small amount of yarn, the quantity depends on how many spikes you want to knit.
25g will suffice for all sizes described in this modification.
In addition, you will need a small amount of cut-off yarn ends or batting to stuff the spikes/dino plates.
