YARN
Any Worsted Weight Yarn with comparable gauge:
-1 skein main color (MC), 100g
-1 skein contrast color (CC), 100g
I used Berroco Vintage (worsted weight) for both colors. You will need significantly less than a 100g skein for the CC and every size can be made with 100g of MC. This could be a nice stash busting project!
NEEDLES
US 6 (4.0mm) for ribbing/brim
US 7 (4.5mm) (for body, charts, and decreases of the hat)
Note:
-For all sizes you may use your favorite method for small circumference knitting.
-For the brim and body of the hat you may use DPNs, a small circular needle, or a longer circular needle if using the Magic Loop method.
-For the crown decrease section you will either need to use DPNs or longer circular needles for the Magic Loop method.
SIZING
(Preemie/Small newborn(NB), NB-3mo, 3-6mo)(6-18mo, 2-5y, 6-10y+)
Tip: Since there are a lot of sizes, you may want to go through the pattern before starting and circle all the numbers associated with the size you are planning to knit.
GAUGE: 19sts & 24 rows/4”(10cm) in st st on larger needles*
A note on gauge: Make sure your stranded colorwork gauge (st st) is the same as your single color gauge. If it’s too tight, you probably want to go up a size on just the colorwork section ex: if your chart on a US 7 (4.5mm) is too tight, try with a size US 8 (5.0mm) needle. Colorwork typically isn’t quite as stretchy as single color knitting, so be advised of that when picking a size. Each size is categorized with 0-2” negative ease (final size is 0-2” smaller than the actual head size for a cozy fit) in mind but if your floats are tight, you probably want to plan on 0-1” of negative ease. Final hat circumferences should be about: (11.2, 12.8, 14)(16.8, 19.2, 21) inches. Final hat height should be approximately (5, 6, 6.25)(6.75, 7.5, 8) inches high. The final dimensions will depend on your yarn choices, gauge, and tension.
