Dis
Part Three of my Tolkien inspired skirt trilogy, this mini skirt is named after an obscure character from J. R. R. Tolkien’s writings: a Dwarf called Dis. She doesn’t actually appear in the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and she is only mentioned by name in the Appendices. But without her, there would have been no Fili and Kili! Dis was their mother, and the younger sister of Thorin Oakenshield.
The skirt design is a nod to the Dwarves of Middle Earth. It’s small but mighty, with no shortage of attitude! The diamond shaped motif throughout symbolizes gems mined by the Dwarves deep beneath the mountains as well as the geometric designs featured in their architecture, weaponry and armour.
Dis is knit in the round from the bottom up. It features a knit two, purl two rib, followed by an all over diamond texture that transitions into smooth stockinette at the hip-to-waist shaping. It’s finished with a simple knit one, purl one rib waistband with eyelet openings for the elastic or drawstring.
This is a fun, quick knit that’s suitable for beginners who’ve mastered the knit and purl stitch and basic shaping techniques.
