Discerning Heart is knit bottom up in one piece with stockinette hearts outlined in 1,1 rib on a Seeded Rib background. The edges are 3 stitches of stockinette allowed to roll over. The first three hearts are worked point first, and the last three are worked bump first, using bowl increases that mimic the multiple slipped stitch decrease. They also use Assia Brill’s T-increase.

2 skeins of Northhampton, Cascade 220, Malabrigo Rios, Rowan Pure Wool Superwash or 4 skeins of Swish Worsted is plenty for this scarf.

This pattern is a triple pun: is is decorated with a heart, it’s published on Valentine’s Day, and it’s to benefit the new Cardio/thoracic unit at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya. I was listening to Dr White speak in my church about the new unit on Valentine’s weekend two years ago, and thought of a washcloth with a heart on it. My friends Marcela Chang and Knitecochic suggested many other applications.

My Mom suggested that I name it, and the other patterns in this series, after hearts in the Bible, so this one is Discerning Heart for Proverbs 18:15 NIV ”The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.”

For each Discerning Heart pattern sold, I will donate $5.00 to the equipment for the building, Account #35270
