Sep: leaf (autumn)
Oct: jack-o-lantern (Halloween)
Nov: turkey (Thanksgiving)
Dec: snowflake (winter)
Plus a cake for the birthday month, a cross for Easter, and a star for Christmas.

Any cotton worsted weight yarn will do, and there is a huge variety of colors available.
