About this Design
The Divergent Thinking Lace Wrap is the product of … (wait for it ☺) … some divergent thinking that I was doing earlier in the year figuring out different ways to play with modular knitting and entrelac construction techniques. This flowing of ideas intersected with the arrival of a new addition to my stitch dictionary collection (The Knitting all Around Stitch Dictionary, Wendy Bernard 2016) and before I could blink, I had my needles out and I was swatching like crazy. After some successful (and less successful) experiments, my twinkle of an idea evolved into this light and gauzy lace wrap.

The stitch pattern is an evolution of Indian Cross Stitch (p86, The Knitting all Around Stitch Dictionary) partnered with some relaxing garter stitch and entrelac modular construction. The pattern is fully reversible and so this wrap looks gorgeous from both sides. Pair this stitch pattern and construction method with a yarn that has a long colour gradient and you will produce something that is surprising and unique. Part of the fun of knitting the lace wrap is not knowing how the colours of your adjacent entrelac units will work out until you actually knit them. That being said, I think the lace wrap would also look fantastic in a solid colour or even as a lovely patchwork of colours to use up any oddments of lace weight yarn that you might have lying around. Why not try a bit of divergent thinking yourself to come up with your own lovely variation of this design.

The pattern is provided in two parts – Part 1 contains all the written instructions. Part 2 contains all the charts and the layout schematic.

Size
One size fits all adults. Finished blocked dimensions are 53.5 cm x 172.7 cm/21 in x 68 in.

Tension
A single blocked unit should be approximately 9 x 9 cm/3 ½ x 3 ½ in, using 2.75 mm (US size 2, UK size 12) circular needles. A close match for tension is less important for this pattern. However, if your gauge is significantly different, please move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time if your gauge does not match. Expect to use more or less yarn if you are working at a different gauge to the one suggested.

Yarn
Approximately 200g of any lace/2 ply yarn (equivalent to 1600 metres/1750 yards) that knits to match the suggested tension gauge. A yarn with a long colour gradient works particularly well with this design.

The sample Divergent Thinking Lace Wrap has been knitted with two balls of Schoppel Lace Ball 100 (100% Merino Wool), Colour 1699.

Needles
2.75 mm (US size 2, UK size 12) 80 cm/32 inch (or longer if you wish) circular needle

Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.

The Pattern
This pattern includes written and charted instructions as well as a photo-tutorial and links to video tutorials (produced by other people) for most of the techniques used in the design.
