Clean, comfortable, with a strong, graphic motif, this shawl is worked from the centre top downwards. The body portion is in almost all in garter stitch, for comfortable squishiness around the neck. The stocking stitch spines keep the knitting just that little bit more interesting. Nupps (small Estonian bobbles) add texture on the graphic mesh-and-stocking-stitch zig-zags that edge the shawl.

The pattern was designed with Divisadero St, San Francisco in mind - a really special place in the city where very hip restaurants and a gourmet ice-creamery still sit alongside old-school hardware stores, taquerias and dive bars.

Sizing
Small (Large) shawl is 49, (67)“ / 124.5, (170) cm across by 23.5, (32)” / 60, (81) cm deep.

This pattern is designed to be flexible. You can make it bigger by repeating Pattern A (the garter stitch portion) or Pattern C (the zig-zags) as many times as desired. This will, of course, require more yarn.

Yardage Requirements
You will need approximately 540, (1,000) yards/ 495, (915) m of DK-weight wool or wool blend yarn.

Tools
Size 5 (3.75 mm) straight needles or circular needle of any length, or size needed to obtain gauge.
Darning needle to weave in ends
2 stitch markers

Pattern Format
Written instructions and charts are provided for all stitch patterns used, so you can work from your preferred format.

Note
Some that have knit this pattern replaced the nupps with beads. This is a great option if you just really don’t like knitting nupps, but please note that the pattern does not provide instructions on how to knit beads into your work.
