This cardigan is worked seamless from the top down. You will begin at the collar with a two color Fisherman’s Rib pattern and work your way down to the arm level with raglan increases. At the arm level, you will divide the stitches for the sleeves and body, and continue to knit down the body to the hem. Then the stitches you held for the sleeves at the arm level are rejoined and worked from the top down. The top-down construction allows for an easy length adjustment.

The Fisherman’s Rib is similar to Brioche Stitch, but much more easy to execute (in my opinion). It is based on a simple technique: working in the stitch below.

The Brioche method creates an unusual set of stitches, with a yarn over lying on top of a slipped stitch. The Fisherman’s Rib is friendly to newcomers, with a recognizable structure of knit and purl stitches.

The two color Fisherman’s Rib uses only a single yarn each row, with no second color to carry and manage. When working in a flat fabric, each row is worked twice before the work is turned. In this pattern, you work first the contrasting color, then the main color. This will maintain the position of the working yarn at the beginning of each row.
