Knit a(n almost-)traditional triangle shawl with combined bias- and top-down techniques! Knit Dogfish today! Or over the course of the next few weeks!

As charming as a small shark, Dogfish is a triangle shawl. It’s primarily worked from the top down, with a bias garter triangle start. It features a repeating pattern, and the pattern is self-completing, so you can stop after any repeat when you notice yarn running out. The pattern is also balanced enough to allow for binding off mid-repeat, if you really need to.

(I did go a little nuts and make the lace pattern mirrored around the center spine; on one hand, I like those small details! On the other, traditional Old Shale is not even symmetrical within itself, and I can imagine that many people May Not Like making it symmetrical overall. If you Do Not Like It, feel free to substitute the original pattern for the mirrored version! Both will work.)

Please note that because I used handspun yarn (Malabrigo Nube, colorway Solis—photos barely live up to it, so it’s worth the time!), yardage estimates are deliberately broader than usual. I spun all 4 ounces/100g of wool in light/fingering weight (14-16 WPI) and used almost all of it. You’ll need at least a full skein of ~440 yards of sock yarn to knit a mini version, and 1.5-2 skeins will make a better shawl.

Materials:

• 2 skeins or 640+ yards of Malabrigo Sock, or 1-2 4 ounce braids of Malabrigo Nube or other soft wool top spun to 14-16 WPI
• 1 24”+ circular needle in US 4-5/35-3.75mm, or size needed for gauge
• Removable stitch markers
• Tapestry needle

Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 42 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat & blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Dimensions (measured flat):
As shown, this shawl is 59.5”/1.51m across the wingspan and 27”/69cm deep at the point. It’s very easy to make this shawl larger by adding repeats.

EDITED TO ADD: The overcast photos actually turned out all right! I guess I’m leaving in the chatty bit about the weather though. I think the level of gravitas for my shark-related shetland-related traditionalish shawl is okay for now.
