I’ve been on an architectural kick for many, many years. I love examining buildings of all sorts and I find that architectural elements and details translate beautifully and interestingly to socks and knitting. This time I’ve focused on the columns that you find in classic Greek architecture and shrunk them all the way down to sock size. These are Doric Columns, the most basic kind of column, with an elegant and simple pediment (base) and cap. The stitches that I have used frame the pediments nicely and even cause the column to exhibit grooves and curve outwards. I have knitted these up in a subtle off-white color to hearken to their inspiration structures, but these would look equally handsome in a darker color and make for some simply elegant men’s or ladies’ socks (especially if they happen to be an architect).

These socks are knit top down with a traditional heel flap and gusset. I give both charted and written patterns. This sock pattern is appropriate for advanced beginners and beyond.

Instructions are given for 4 sizes: Ladies S, M, L and XL (Ladies L = Men’s M and Ladies XL = Men’s L).

Please note: the cast-on amount of stitches may strike you as inordinately large and tempt you to size down. I recommend against doing this! The pattern used for the columns present throughout most of these socks has a lot of negative ease ( = is snug) so the extra stitches are necessary for the desired fit.
