Dottie
Important note: If you haven’t already purchased Morse Stitch Decoded you will need to do so in order to knit this cardigan. Morse Stitch Decoded comes with three complementary patterns. Two are for cowls - Spy Ring and The Circus - the other is for this baby blanket. The net proceeds of the sales of Decoded will be donated to the charity Freedom From Torture. Purchasing Dottie + Morse Stitch Decoded entitles you to this pattern for free.
Dottie is a cardigan for a little girl that has a vintage feel. Individual morse stitch bobbles are offset against a stocking stitch background on the body whilst the border and sleeve cuffs are worked in a complementary morse stitch pattern.
This cardigan takes so little yarn you can probably find enough in your stash – at least for the smaller size. To help with stash-busting and ‘in-between’ sizes, Dottie has been designed with both sport weight and DK yarn in mind.
Instructions are given for two sizes but, depending on the weight of yarn and size of needle used, four different sizes can be achieved.
Approximate finished chest size:
-
54 cm / 21.5” - c. 285 m Sport weight yarn 3.5 mm & 3.75 mm circular needles. Gauge 23 sts x 32 rows
-
58 cm / 23” - c. 350 m DK yarn 3.75 mm & 4 mm circular needles. Gauge 22 sts x 30 rows
-
61 cm / 24” - c. 400 m Sport weight yarn 3.5 mm & 3.75 mm circular needles. Gauge 22 sts x 30 rows
-
63.5 cm / 25” - c. 420 m DK yarn 3.75 mm & 4 mm circular needles. Gauge 21 sts x 28 rows.
This pattern involves virtually no seaming - only the sleeve cuff, which is knit flat, requires seaming.
Also needed: ring markers, two lengths of scrap yarn, a tapestry needle, three buttons (about 15 mm in size). You may also need a set of double-pointed needles for knitting the sleeve cuffs - 3.75 mm if using Sport weight yarn or 4 mm if using DK.
Update July 2014
The pattern has now been updated to include a second pdf that contains instructions for knitting Dinky Dottie. Knit to gauge in sport weight yarn the finished cardigan should measure c. 18” around the chest and in DK c.19.5”.
