I stumbled upon the idea for this heel by looking closely at the heels on some of my favourite commercial socks. I noticed that while most socks feature a short row heel with a single ‘seam’, some of my favourite pairs had a seam which split, creating a roomier, better fitting heel. This expanded heel is easy and quick to knit, I’ve designed it with both Wrap and Turn short rows and German short rows. This heel works great as a contrast heel, and is perfect for shorty socks. Due to its unique construction and fit, it can only be worked toe up.

Pattern contains directions for my rounded toe, separate files for the German Short Row and Wrap and Turn Versions, and directions for contrasting and non-contrasting heel colours. Also, knit a leg and cuff, or use my directions for rolled brimmed shorty socks.

It is recommended that you be familiar with basic sock construction before knitting this pattern.

Rather than provide S, M, L sizes, I have written the pattern for a range of common sock stitch counts. This way, you can choose your preferred needle size and stitch count for a vanilla sock and off you go. Alternatively you can substitute this heel into any toe up patterned sock with a short row heel, just match the stitch count to the pattern.
