This was a pattern of my great-great-grandmother’s that my dad found vaguely written out on a piece of paper tucked away in an old writing desk. He realized it was the pattern for an old afghan that she had made for him when he was a boy. By looking at the afghan and decoding the pattern, I was able to figure out how it was done.

It’s a totally reversible pattern and makes a nice heavy blanket for the cold winter months. As you go, there is the option of making the pattern with fringe, as Dad’s Grandma Klenke’s original pattern is, or without fringe for those of you out there like me who think that fringe is a waste of good yarn.

This is a general pattern to teach how to do this double-sided stitch, and not specific to create any particular finished piece. It is a very flexible pattern. You can use lighter weight yarn for a fabric that’s thick, but not quite as heavy. You can add stripes to it or add more colors to make it even more complex…the possibilities are endless!

If you have any questions, comments, or feedback on this pattern, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I have no delusions that the patterns I write are perfect.
