The Double Soft Serve Beanie is a fun and cozy introduction to cables! It features alternating cables in a cute pattern repeat, which is quite reminiscent of soft-serve ice cream! Each cable swirls the opposite direction. Knitted with a thick and thin yarn, We Are Knitters’ The Wave Wool gives this beanie some extra texture!

The colourways Flamingo and Copper were used to make the Medium-sized beanies, while Pearl was used to make the Large-sized beanie. The circumference of my head is approximately 22” (55.9 cm). The Medium fits more snugly; the Large fits more loosely.

YARN

  • 1 skein of We Are Knitters’ The Wave Wool (100 g/109 yds or 100 m - newer skeins have this yardage/meterage, which is what my calculations are based off of; older skeins contained more yarn - approximately 142 yds or 130 m)
  • Note: 93 g was used for the Medium hat and nearly 100 g was used for the Large hat, excluding a gauge swatch. It would be a good idea to use scrap yarn for the gauge swatch if it is available, or swatch the yarn and then unravel it, or have a second skein ready, if necessary.
  • Other options: Please check out yarnsub.com for similar yarn suggestions.
  • Please note that adding additional length to the hat will require more yarn.

Yarn suggestions: Muench Yarns’ Black Forest Naturwolle; Abuelita Yarns’ Thick and Thin; DI.VE’s Fiamma (2 skeins required instead); Knit Collage’s Cast Away (2 skeins) and Spun Cloud (2 skeins); King Cole’s Bamboozle; and Scheepjes’ Verona.

Close yarn match: Manos Del Uruguay’s Serpentina.

KNITTING NEEDLES

  • 1 set of US 10.5/6.5 mm circular knitting needles
  • 1 set of US 11/8 mm circular knitting needles
  • Optional to work crown decreases: 1 set of US 11/8 mm double pointed needles
  • Note: Another option would be to use the magic loop method when working the crown decreases.

NOTIONS

  • 1 stitch marker (to mark the beginning of round)
  • 1 cable needle
  • 1 tapestry needle

GAUGE

  • 13 sts and 15 rows = 4” x 4” (10 cm x 10 cm) using US 11/8 mm knitting needles using stockinette/stocking stitch

SIZES

  • Medium(Large)
  • How to read this in the pattern: Directions will be given for the Medium size first, followed by the Large size in brackets.
  • Example: “CO 60(70) sts,” gives the directions to cast on 60 sts for the Medium size and 70 sts for the Large size.

MEASUREMENTS

  • Medium: Unstretched: 20.3” (51.6 cm) circumference; Stretches to approximately 22” (55.9 cm); Length: 9.5” (24.1 cm)
  • Large: Unstretched: 23.7” (60.2 cm) circumference; Stretches to approximately 26” (66.0 cm); Length: 9.5” (24.1 cm)

ADJUSTMENTS

  • The length of the hat can be adjusted with the number of BODY pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds 1.1” or 2.7 cm of length.
  • You may also want to add a faux-fur pom pom to your beanie for a nice finish!
