This pattern makes a super warm, thick scarf from not-so-thick yarn. Double stockinette is not really stockinette at all and makes a double layer of fabric at a much denser gauge than stockinette or garter stitch. With a few rows of garter stitch at each end, it makes for a practical scarf in colder climates.
