This top-down triangular shawl was designed for James River Yarn Crawl that starts in Richmond, Virginia and progresses toward the Tidewater area, near the ocean. The stitch pattern of the top part of the shawl is representing river locks, a mechanism that is used to raise and lower boats between different levels of water in the river. Then the shawl flows into an old favorite of many knitters, Old Shale pattern, that unmistakenly resembles the ocean waves. The shawl is designed as a 1 or 2 skein project, and has a separate crochet version as well.

Skill level: beginner to intermediate
Finished dimensions: Small: about 59 in / 150 cm at the top edge, and about 23.75 in / 60.5 cm from top to bottom. Large: about 74 in / 188 cm at the top edge, and about 31 in / 79 cm from top to bottom.
Yarn: fingering weight yarn, size 1; about 400 yds / 365 m for Small size, 670 yds / 615 m for Large size. 2 skeins of Little Fox Yarn Vixen 80% superwash merino / 20% silk, Blue Boy colorway, were used for this sample (tag info 400yds / 100 g).
Needles: circular needle 36” 4 mm/ US6 or size to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 14 st and 26 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in garter stitch blocked.
