Down The Shore Shawl
Down The Shore is a generously sized garter stitch shawl, with an elegant lace border.
Finished size (after blocking) is 62” across the top edge, and 22” long (from top edge to bottom point).
The main body of the shawl is worked from the top down, in garter stitch, with strategically placed increases to create this very flattering and wearable triangular shape.
The garter stitch pattern is repetitive and easy to memorize - perfect for social or tv knitting.
Upon completion of the garter stitch section, there is a beautiful scalloped lace border knit along the bottom edge.
Instructions are clearly written.
Skills for the main body (garter stitch section) of the shawl are casting on, knitting, and increasing (kfb).
Skills required for the lace border are increasing (yo), decreasing (k2tog), purling and binding off.
Down The Shore can be knit in a single color (sample used 2 skeins of Madelinetosh Tosh DK in Rose) or 2 colors with wide color block stripes.
The 2 color version was knit with Malabrigo Rios - 2 skeins of Arco Iris (main color), and 1 skein of Magenta (contrast color).
If using a single color, keep in mind that hand dyed yarns can vary from skein to skein - so you might want to consider alternating rows between 2 skeins, in order to blend the colors better.
Pattern recommends size 8 needles (24 and 40” circular).
Recommended gauge is 4 stitches per inch in garter stitch.
Exact gauge is not critical for fit, but will affect finished size and amount of yarn used.
The main body (garter stitch section) of the pattern is very forgiving. If you forget an increase, nobody will know, and you can easily add an extra increase on the next row!
The border is an easy feather and fan lace pattern, with detailed row by row instructions, and row by row stitch counts are included.
I hope you’ll enjoy knitting and wearing your Down The Shore Shawl, and please post photos of your finished projects….especially if you find yourself enjoying the beaches, ‘down the shore’!
