This is a sideways shawl that was inspired by a skein of yarn named “Winter Dragon”, hand-dyed by Susan of Desert Vista Dyeworks. Immediately the colorway reminded me of Dragon Maleficent from Walt Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty”, and Maleficent is my favorite Walt Disney Villain. I decided to design a shawl that had a border or dragon scales. These scales were very fun and addicting to construct. I think this pattern is better suited for solid or tonal yarn to show off the detail of the scales. Three different colors, gradient, or color block would also work well. This shawl lends itself to be worn either traditionally or draped in a number of ways around the neck, enhancing any outfit for any occasion.
SHAPE: Crescent
NOTIONS: 2 stitch markers. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
PATTERN STYLE: The pattern contains written as well as chart instructions. There is a key and full abbreviation list included as well.
DIFFICULTY: Advanced Beginner/Early Intermediate.
YARN: This pattern is better suited for gradient, color block, solid or tonal yarn to show off the detail of the lace.
SIZE: 56” x 16” - 76” x 16” (relaxed)
This is the size of the sample, please keep in mind the size of your shawl will vary depending on your yarn yardage.
NOTE: You will need to weigh your yarn on a scale before you start, and as you knit this shawl. If you are not using a scale, you MUST swatch to get gauge and follow the repeats of the sample.
The beauty of the construction of this shawl is you can make as small or as large as you would like, repeating the sections according to your OWN skein’s yardage, enabling you to use very close to the entire skein of yarn.
