Alocasia Fun Facts
Alocasia is a member of the Arum family and grows in the tropical rainforests of southeast Asia.
There are around 79 species of Alocasia. Remember the Stringray Alocasia we made? They’re family!
Alocasia’s are also known as “Elephant Ears”.
Alocasias can be very poisonous. The leaves contain insoluble oxalate crystals. Humans and pets should not consume this plant as chewing or biting into a leaf release the crystals which can cause swelling and irritation of the mouth and GI tract.
Did you know that the Alocasia plant sweat too? This is one way of communicating that it has received too much water. This process is known as guttation.
People first grew Elephant Ear plants in Indonesia, India, China, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Polynesia, and around the Mediterranean Sea.
