Everyone should have a “go-to” cowl in their wardrobe. They are easy to wear, look great over most styles of tops, are unbelievably comfortable, and keep you nice and toasty during the cooler months. The scaled stitch pattern of the Dragon Skin Cowl combined with a heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn gives this cowl a nice structure and interesting texture to make it the perfect knitted accessory to wear over nearly any shirt or sweater.

The pattern gives instructions to knit either a small, medium or large cowl. The Small, intended to be worn fairly snugly around the neck without wrapping, can be blocked up to 30” (76.2 cm) circumference. The Medium, which can be worn wrapped once for a snug fit similar to the size Small but bulkier OR not wrapped for a looser, draped look; it can be blocked up to a circumference of 60” (152.4 cm). The Large, intended to be wrapped once for a loose, draped look with the bulk of a second wrap, can be blocked up to a circumference of 75” (190.5 cm). Any of the sizes can be blocked to smaller dimensions for a thicker fabric that will fit snugger, making this cowl extremely customizable for your preferred fit and style.

The cowl in the photographs is a size Medium, blocked to slightly smaller dimensions in the first two photos on model for a thicker fabric, then blocked to dimensions in the next 3 photos on model for a draped fabric.

The gauge for this project is not critical, although the amount of yarn and blocking dimensions will vary for different gauges. The stitch pattern is very forgiving and looks great blocked gently or stretched out for a fabric with more drape.

The sample was knit using one skein of Fierce Fibers Buxom Yarn, 250 grams (400 yds / 366 meters) of Merino/Cashmere/Nylon heaven, in the Forest Shadows colorway.

This pattern uses US 8 (5.0mm) 24” (61cm) circular needles for size Small OR 32” (81cm) for sizes Medium and Large.
