Who doesn’t love a hat with lots of texture? Dragon’s Gate Hat has plenty of that! The stitch pattern used in this hat is a variation of one of the stitch patterns used in Grant Avenue Stroll, a wrap I designed for the book, I Knit San Francisco.

Dragon’s Gate is the ornamental archway at the entrance to San Francisco’s Chinatown. This stitch pattern resembles the roof tiles on the archway with a little twist. While my family didn’t live in Chinatown, I spent a lot of time there. We made weekly grocery shopping trips for fresh produce and dim sum. My family had businesses in Chinatown, I went to church and day camp there, I volunteered and organized fundraisers for the Chinatown YMCA, and my grandparents lived on the outskirts which meant a stop in Chinatown first to bring dim sum, noodles and fruit to them. When I go to Chinatown now, things have changed and not changed at the same time. It will always be home for me.

Swatch yarn and extra yarn are included in the yarn requirement. Any adjustments will affect the yarn requirement.

This pattern is written for seven sizes to fit head sizes from the very young to seasoned hat wearers. The listed circumference measurement is for the body of the hat. The Dragon’s Gate stitch pattern is quite stretchy. When choosing a size, decide how much negative ease you’d like for the hat. For a less snug fit, consider 2”/5 cm of negative ease. For a snugger fit, consider 3” to 4”/7.5 cm to 10 cm of negative ease. Note the cables have better definition when worn with a snugger fit.
