Dragons scales socks
‘Dragon scales’ socks are worked from the cuff down. They start with a simple ribbed cuff, then continue with
a simple all-over leafy lace print. The heel is worked with decreases and increases mimicking short-rows (you
can easily replace with a classic short-row heel if you prefer). The foot is worked with leafy print on the top
and stockinette on the bottom. Design finishes with a classic toe with decreases in every other round and a
Kitchener graft.
YARN: classic sock yarn – fingering weight (380-420m/415-455 yds per 100g/3.5oz), a wool blend appropriate
for socks (e.g. with nylon, silk, bamboo, etc)
You can use a solid / tonal or slow gradient yarn.
Yardages per size are provided in the Sizing & Yardage table below.
The sample is knitted in hand-dyed yarn @zolotaianit (75% merino wool, 25% polyamide)
NEEDLES: 80cm / 32” circular needle for magic loop or set of DPNs in 2 mm / US 0 (or size to obtain gauge).
NOTIONS: Stitch markers, row counter (optional), scissors and tapestry needle.
GAUGE
36 sts and 48 rows per 1010cm/ 44” after wet-blocking in print
Finished sock circumference (unstretched) is 20.5 (23, 25)
cm / 8 (9, 10)”. I recommend picking a size based on foot
circumference (and NOT shoe size), go for the one that gives
you 1.25-2.5 cm / 0.5 -1” of negative ease. The sample was
knit in size 2 shown on a foot circumference of 22 cm / 8.5”.
Leg length worked in sample is 16.5 cm / 6.5” (leg and foot
length are fully adjustable)
