Driggs
Driggs is a purely ridiculous hat. It’s my take on a very basic hat approach, but features a distinct look and design, with shaping and buttons that allow the wearer to style it in at least half a dozen different ways.
Want a silly hat? Oh, this pattern will give you a silly hat.
Driggs is a relatively quick knit, and potentially makes a good introduction to brioche knit in the round. You’ll be working small sections of brioche rib and using both basic brioche stitches—brk and brp—but won’t be asked to work any brioche increases or decreases for this project.
To knit this hat, you’ll need to be comfortable knitting in the round and working knits, purls, and m1 increases. If brioche is completely new to you, you’ll have to be comfortable with learning a new skill, too!
Gauge for Driggs is 19 sts and 31 rows over blocked stockinette. This pattern includes a schematic so you can check your hat’s dimensions against those measurements as you go, so it’s easy to prevent a gauge disaster. Be sure to use the needle size you need to knit this gauge!
You’ll also need about 175 yards of worsted-weight yarn, one 16”/40cm US 8-9/5-5.5mm circular needle, a crochet hook in a similar size, two large buttons (1 1/8”), and a tapestry needle for general finishing and sewing on buttons.
Driggs is companion hat to Victor, naturally. I’ve included notes for the original bulkier version at the end of the .PDF, so you get a lot of versatility.
