The inside of your car isn’t always the most hospitable place. Depending on where you live, the steering wheel can get scorching hot, freezing cold, or (if you’re really lucky) both, at different times of the year. Fortunately, there’s a simple solution. This bias-knit steering wheel cover is easy to grip and protects your hands from the most extreme temperatures your local climate can throw at you. Plus, it makes your car look nice.

Since a good, snug fit on your steering wheel is important for safety, and because steering wheels vary by model and manufacturer, it’s best to size your cover against your actual steering wheel as you knit. That way, you can be sure of a perfect custom fit.

The sample cozy in the pattern used about half a 95-yard skein of Lily Sugar’n Cream Stripes. Feel free to choose a worsted-weight yarn that you prefer, as long as it’s machine washable. I know that acrylic yarn won’t actually get hot enough to melt in your car, but I was still hesitant to use it here; you might find its durability a plus, though.

Once the body of the cover is knitted, finishing is done with a crochet hook -- but don’t worry, you don’t need to be able to do anything more than slip-stitch.
