Welcome abord matey, you are on a journey sailing the high seas. I hope you have your effects in order because we are casting off soon. The sea is an exciting place, nothing but you, the ship, and the open sea. However the seas can be a dangerous place, full of danger, and not to mention it can be cold while sailing.

Drogue is a nautical term for a device that is used to slow the ship down in a storm. This design came from my fascination with sailing. The colors I chose were to mimic gentle or not so gentle movement of the sea.

This scarf/shawl is knit with two colors, using short rows and eyelets that lend to its shape. Starting at the top, you will short row to achieve the beginning crescent shape. After that a series of eyelets, more short rows and a border all add up to Drogue.

Materials

Approximately 784 - 840 yards of fingering to sport weight yarn.

1 skein each color: Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (100% Superwash Merino Wool, 420 yards/skein)
Colors used: Cousteau (MC), Esoteric (CC)

1 skein each color: Abstract Fiber Alto (100% Blue Faced Leicester, 392 yards/skein)
Colors used: Silver (MC), Turquoise (CC)

This shawl does utilize a lot of short rowing, it’s recommend that you choose a technique that works well for you. The technique utilized for both versions was the Japanese Short Row. I would recommend, however, using a German or other similar Short Row technique.

-The two versions of this shawl are similar in size, but using two different yarns.

-Madelinetosh Merino Light (Captain Size): I used a U.S. 4 (3.25mm) needle to get a blocked gauge of 18 sts x 48 rows (24 bumps). Finished measurements are 80” (203 cm) wingspan at the longest point and a depth of 12” (30cm). A lace border was used to finish off this version.

-Abstract Fiber Alto (Boatswain Size): I used a U.S. 6 (4mm) needle to get a blocked gauge of 18 sts x 48 rows (24 bumps). Finished measurements are 82” (208 cm) wingspan at the longest point and a depth of 14” (35cm). A simple eyelet/garter border was used to finish off this version.

-For the border you have the choice of using the lace border or just the plain eyelet/garter border. Regardless of which you choose, make sure to have enough yarn on hand for completing either edge treatment.
