This sweater has an oversized, boxy design with a 2-strip granny square section at the bottom of the sweater, filled with smaller squares which create an attractive zig-zag hem. The main body of the sweater and the sleeves are made using an easy-to-memorise chevron stitch pattern which creates a wonderful, understated texture. Hip length and with a wide, slash neck, it is worn with plenty of positive ease for a comfy and relaxed fit with full-length sleeves.

This design allows you to play with the wonderful array of colours offered by Jamieson’s of Shetland. The granny square section in Sample 1 uses several autumnal colours with Sample 2 using a limited palette to show off the geometric pattern.

Construction
The sweater is worked in the round from the bottom up. The two rows of large and small granny squares are made using the join-as-you-go method and then the body is worked upwards, in the round (but still turning our work at the end of every round, thus working alternate rounds on both the RS and WS) using the chevron stitch. Front and back are then split for arms. The chevron stitch is “levelled off” for any sections that need straight edges. There is some gentle shoulder shaping and neck edge shaping. Shoulders are seamed by sewing with a whip stitch.

Sleeves are also worked in the round with chevron stitch from the bottom up with increases for shaping. The chevron stitch on the sleeve cuffs is also “levelled off” and sleeves are sewn in with mattress stitch.
