Druid Crown
The leaf-inspired colorwork on this hat evokes the druid’s primal magics, drawn from the land. This companion hat to the Druid Circle Sweater lets you practice your stranded colorwork! Already knit the sweater? You can use your leftover yarn!
Sizing
Fits preemie (0mo, 6mo, 12mo) (child/adult S, adult M, adult L) heads with options for either a close-fitting beanie or slouchy hat.
Head circumference: 12 (14, 16, 18) (20, 22, 24)“ or 30 (35, 40, 45) (50, 55, 60) cm.
Fit/Customization
Beanie will fit with 1-2”/2.5-5cm of negative ease. Slouchy will fit with 0-2”/0-5cm of positive ease. Larger sizes/slouchier fits or working the pattern at a different gauge can be obtained by following the modification instructions.
Yardage (beanie) - Add ~30% for slouchy
MC: 40 (50, 75, 100) (120, 150, 200) yds
CC1: 10 (15, 20, 20) (25, 25, 30) yds
CC2: 15 (20, 25, 25) (30, 30, 35) yds
Yardage estimates are approximate, and assume that the knitter knits to gauge without modifications. Yardage requirements will vary with yarn choice and modifications.
Yarn Requirements
Sport- to DK-weight yarn in a wool or wool-blend 2-ply ideal for colorwork. I have included some yarn suggestions. As long as you can get gauge, it should work! Refer to test knit projects for more suggestions.
Gauge: 6 sts x 8 rows = 1”/2.5cm or 24 sts x 32 rows =
4”/10cm
Gauge is measured in stockinette using MC with size A needles, lightly blocked.
Tools
Size A: 16” circulars and DPN’s in size needed to obtain gauge (recommended: US4/3.5mm)
Size B: 16” circular one size smaller than Size A
Other: tapestry needle, stitch markers
Techniques
This pattern is suitable for an advanced beginner with some familiarity with stranded colorwork.
Prior to knitting this pattern, you should be comfortable with knitting in the round, increasing & decreasing, and simple stranded colorwork. Colorwork is charted only, with no floats longer
than 5 stitches.
Some support is provided for customizing hat. Pattern Key describes all abbreviations and describes stitches used.
Pattern support can be found in my Ravelry group, Piper Nell
Sample Specifications
Sample (project page) shows an Adult M beanie, with extra rounds worked before and after the colorwork to add height. Sample uses BMFA Woobu for MC and North Light Fibers Water Streek DK for CC1 and CC2.
