Duck Soup
Description:
A fun (nearly) seamless jacket featuring a knotted hood, knotted i-cord buttons and i-cord loops. It is knit back and forth on a circular needle. The sleeves knit in the round.
The jacket is cleverly designed to grow with the lucky child it adorns. Wear it as a roomy 3/4 length overcoat this fall with a folder brim around the hood, and folder garter cuffs that look equally good folded or not then come spring, it will still fit as a more tailored cardigan - just unfold the cuffs and brim ;0;)
Pattern includes thorough photo tutorial for frog closures.
Yarn requirements:
4 (5, 6, 6, 6, 8, 9) 50g balls of chunky weight yarn for the jacket (samples were knit using Classic Elite Countess yarn)
Small amounts of different coloured yarn in worsted weight or thinner yarn for the frog closures - leftover self-striping sock yarn would work great! (samples used Knit Picks Palette yarn)
Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows over 4 inches in stocking stitch using US8/5.0mm needles
Be sure to check row gauge! If you are not getting 24 rows per 6 inches this will affect the depth of the armholes.
Modification suggestions:
For wider sleeves (i.e., if you are not getting row gauge and are finding the sleeves too narrow) work a few extra increase rows in the raglan section but only work the increases on the sleeves and not on the fronts and back so that you are increasing sleeve stitches but not body stitches. You can also cast on 2-3 extra stitches at the armhole for just a little more width on the sleeves without affecting the depth of the armhole.
For tapered sleeves (the pattern as written gives you even straight sleeves to accomodate another garment underneath - but in the 2/3 and 4/5 sizes, you can taper the sleeves toward the wrists as follows), place a marker in the middle of the sleeve at the underarm and work a decrease on either side of this marker every 8 rows until it is to your liking.
