For your child’s next hat, try this interesting take on a classic ribbed beanie. The crown was inspired by the raglan construction of a sweater shoulder and is shaped from the sides inwards instead of the usual spiral.

  • DIFFICULTY Intermediate – Knitting, purling, working in the round, simple decreases.

  • SIZES To fit head circumference 16 (18, 20, 22, 24) in / 40.5 (45.5, 51, 56, 61) cm. Finished circumference 14 ¼ (16, 17 ¾, 19 ½, 21 ¼) in / 35.5 (40, 44.5, 49, 53.5) cm. Designed to be worn with about 2 in / 5 cm of negative ease. Shown in third size.

  • YARN Knit Picks Swish Worsted (100% superwash merino wool; 50 g / 110 yds / 101 m), colour #24297 Allspice, 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skeins.

Substitute with approximately 110 (110, 110, 110, 150) yds / 100 (100, 100, 100, 140) m of worsted weight yarn.

  • GAUGE 18 sts and 26 rnds = 4 in / 10 cm in St st.

  • NEEDLES AND NOTIONS Size 4.5 mm (US 7) set of double pointed needles. Adjust needle size as necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
