Gauge
You can alternate hook size and yarn weight as long as you establish gauge.

Using Dk (8 ply) and 4.5 mm hook gauge is as follows:
17 dc stitches and 10.5 rows per 10cm (4 inches)
Or the diameter across circumference after round 4 is approximately 7.5-8cm
