The word “durable” stems from the Celtic word, “duir,” which was the Celtic name for oak trees. Oak trees were believed to be the kings of the forest, and exceptionally magical. Where I live, I am surrounded by towering, spindly Garry oak trees that have bewildered me since I was a child. They continue to be my favourite tree, bringing me a sense of safety and calm.

When I was younger, I would walk through the local cemetery often to go visit my family on the other side. On Vancouver Island, it rains a fair amount, and it is impossible to ever know when rain is going to start flooding you out, so I often found myself caught in the midst of storms while traversing the wooded cemetery paths. If I was close enough to my destination, I would just run the remaining bit, but sometimes I would patiently wait out the rain under my favourite Garry oak tree in the cemetery.
