Duke of Wellington Socks
For generations our ancestors sat around the fire in the evenings, knitting together, sharing patterns and stories of the day, and longer stories that told of our steps through time.
These socks tell the story of the Duke of Wellington, the ship my ancestors sailed on to Australia in 1850. It sank 3 years later.
The pattern is reminiscent of the socks that my Great Grandmother’s might have packed for their long 91 day journey - something special to provide them warmth, familiarity, and comfort once they retired for the evening in their cabin.
These socks are knit from the cuff down. The length of the leg can be shortened or lengthened to your preference. The heel is shaped using the heel flap method and the toe is grafted together with Kitchener stitch. Instructions are written for the magic loop technique.
