Dundee Scarf – classy scarf to keep you warm
The scarf features Scottish fabrics inspired colorwork designed to have a woven look. Choose a high contrast color combination to make the colorwork pattern stand out.

The stitches are cast on using Judy’s Magic Cast-on. The scarf is then worked in the round in Stranded colorwork. Last stitches are bound off using Kitchener stitch. Cute fringes are added afterwards.

In case you are working off the pattern gauge, there’s guidance on the scarf width.

Gauge
24 sts and 17 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches over the colorwork pattern worked in the round (blocked) using 5 mm / US 8 needle(s).

Note on the gauge:
For the yarns used in the pattern, the gauge significantly changed in blocking as the scarf grew in length and got smaller in width. The pre-blocking stitch gauge was approximately 18 sts per 10 cm / 4 inches. Therefore, in the beginning, aim for a scarf wider than you wish to achieve, because it’s easier to stretch the scarf lengthwise in blocking than widthwise.

Sizes
There are two sizes with 175 (175) cm / 70 inches (excluding the 10 cm / 4 inches fringes) in length and 15 (20) cm / 6 (8) inches in width.

The sample is shown in the smaller size.

Materials needed
Yarn
Two strands of both colors are held together throughout the pattern:

MC: 2 (3) skeins of Laurel Knits Udu | Cloudy Plum | 75% Brushed Suri Alpaca, 25% Silk | Yardage 300 m / 328 yds per 50 g
or 600 (800) m / 655 (870) yds of similar yarn or 300 (400) m / 328 (440) yds of double thick yarn.

AND
CC: 2 (3) skeins of Laurel Knits Udu | Speckled Teddy |
or 600 (800) m / 655 (870) yds of similar yarn or 300 (400) m / 328 (440) yds of double thick yarn.

Choose a light-weight yarn and use a loose gauge for a drapey scarf.

For the sample in the smaller size, all of the above yarn was used, so there was no leftover yarns nor swatch (I used other skeins of this same yarn), so these are the minimum amounts of yarn for a quite narrow scarf. Please note that if you are working with tighter gauge or wish to achieve wider or longer scarf, more yarn will be required.

Needles
5 mm / US 8 needle(s) of your preferred type for small circumference knitting. (For the first 20-30 rounds it’s easier to use DPN’s, two circular needles or Magic Loop. After that, circular needles of 40 cm / 16 inches in length work nicely.)
