Dunstanburgh Castle Mitts
by Sue Jackson
The pattern is a combination of twisted rib and a two strand cable. The two strand cable is inspired the two huge towers of Dunstanburgh Castle built by John of Gaunt & dominating the coast for miles, and the twisted rib the other towers and the supporting cliffs below. The two mitts are not identical as the cable is offset and closer to the thumb on both mitts. The ‘big cables’ grow out of the smaller ones produced by the twisted or baby cable rib pattern.
The mitts can be knit in any fingering yarn. A slightly plumper fingering will produce a denser knit but because of the stretchy fabric created by the baby cable rib, fit shouldn’t be an issue.
