This is my 200th free Ravelry pattern and it’s roughly 2000 years old! Sock fragments were found in the archaeological dig of the Roman-era city of Dura-Europos in what’s now Syria. Full disclosure: the socks were worked in nalbinding which looks identical to twisted knitting stitches. The only way to distinguish Dura-Europo’s version of nalbinding from knitting is by the increases and decreases.
Working though the back loop of every stitch makes a firm fabric but don’t increase your needle size; use needles with sharp points instead. (Bamboo needles worked well for me.) If preferred, you could twist just the right-side stitches.
The swatch is 2.5 inches wide at gauge. It took me about 1 hour to knit 2.5 inches of a 23-stitch-wide swatch.

Skills needed: cast on, knit tbl, purl tbl, 2 types of k2tog tbl (see notes), M1L and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

40 yards of #10 crochet thread will make about 10 inches of a 23-stitch-wide strip in the stated gauge.
