Dutch Spring Socks

As soon as spring is peeking around the corner, you see tulips everywhere while driving through certain parts of The Netherlands. Every flower shop bursts with tulips in all possible colours. I think there is no Dutch household without a vase full of tulips somewhere in the living room. This inspired me to write up this Dutch Springs Socks pattern: socks where you can play with lots of colours, while the tulips remind you of Dutch spring.
While tulips are originally from Central Asia, The Netherlands are nowadays one of the biggest export countries of tulips worldwide. At the start of spring, you could visit the Keukenhof where a large range of tulips is exhibited. If you want to see lots of tulips, but don’t want to visit the very touristic and crowded Keukenhof: just take your car and drive through Flevoland in the middle of April and you will be surrounded by lots and lots of tulips.
Notes:
- This pattern is for a top-down (partially) colourwork sock, with a heel flap and gusset, knit using the magic loop method of knitting in the round.
- Instructions are given if you’d like to knit contrasting cuffs, heels and/or toes.
- Pattern contains written instructions as well as a chart for the colourwork part.
- Pattern contains helpful tips on knitting the colourwork part loose enough to get it over your ankle.
- Pattern contains a video tutorial (both in Dutch and English) on how to catch floats.
- New to sock knitting and/or reading an English knitting pattern? Please check out my online knitting courses, where I teach you step-by-step how to navigate through an English pattern and how to knit top down socks (Dutch only): https://www.mirjammolenbeek.nl/cursussen/
Yarn:
Sample used:
- Durable Soqs, Antique Pink (227), 50 grams (210 meters), 75% wool, 25% nylon (as Colour A).
- Durable Soqs, Paradise Pink (420), 50 grams (210 meters), 75% wool, 25% nylon (as contrasting Colour B).
- Durable Soqs, Cadmium Green (2157), 50 grams (210 meters) 75% wool, 25% nylon (as Colour C).
Any fingering weight sock yarn will do.
The largest size will use up more yarn than the smaller sizes. 100 grams in total is enough yarn for knitting these socks in the largest size (size Large, European shoe size 49). If you only use contrasting colours B and C for the colourwork part, 15 grams of each colour will be enough for the largest size. If you also want to use these colours for the cuffs, heels andor toes, make sure you have enough yarn to do so (the largest size will need 30 grams of yarns for contrasting cuffs, heels and toes).
Needles:
- 2.25 mm and 2.75 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 80 or 100 cm circular needle for knitting magic loop
Or use your preferred method of knitting colourwork in the round. I prefer knitting the colourwork part on a 23 cm circular needle (largest size), since it’s easier to carry your floats.
Notions:
- 2 stitch markers (closed, matching your needle size)
- opening stitch markers / progress keepers when you want to keep track of your rounds
- tapestry needle for weaving in your ends
- wool wash for washing & blocking
- sock blockers for blocking (optional)
- sock ruler (optional)
Gauge:
32 sts x 48 rnds in stockinette stitch (knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm

Pattern is written for: kids, (small, medium, large)
European shoe size: 27-32 (33-37, 38-42, 43-49)
