Early Frost Hat
Aunt Ninny believes that sparkles, like thong undies, do not belong on anyone over 25—but there are exceptions. For sparkles, at least. The Early Frost Hat is one. Teeny tiny sequins hide in the mohair and flash like frost when the light hits them. The wide brim, worked in a twisted cable rib, adds structure and warmth and keeps the hat in place no matter what kind of trouble you get into.
This beau chapeau pailleté uses three different yarns: a worsted weight for the brim (Berroco Vintage in sample), then a combination of Knitting Fever Schmaltz—yes, Schmaltz!—a sequined novelty yarn, and Berroco Cirrus, a mid-weight mohair, for the top. You’ll have enough Schmaltz left over for other endeavors, and good thing, too, for what’s life without a dollop of schmaltz?
You can substitute any worsted weight yarn for the Vintage, but the beauty of the Vintage/Cirrus combination is that they are both made by Berroco so the colors match. Don’t get too hung up about the Schmaltz; any thin sequined yarn will work. Pick a neutral and mix it with anything. The brim takes a tad less than half a skein of Vintage, and the top uses about two thirds of a skein of Cirrus.
