This cowl was originally designed for River Colors Studio as part of the Yarn Discovery Tour in northern Ohio.

Spring is my favorite time of the year. I love the slow reveal of color as trees and spring flowers begin to bud and waiting and watching those tiny buds unfold into beautiful flowers. I began this cowl last January in anticipation of this special time of year. Once it was complete it became the perfect little neck warmer for those spring months.

Using just one 100 gram skein of fingering weight yarn, the cowl is knit in the round from the bottom up on the wrong (knit) side keeping purl stitches to a minimum. Short and gradually longer stems reveal tiny flower buds. I recommend using a tonal or lightly speckled yarn to make the simple pattern stand out. Perfect for that special souvenir skein you couldn’t resist buying on a recent yarn shop visit.

While gauge is not crucial, overall size and drape of the cowl will vary with differences in gauge and yarn.

Weighing your skein before and periodically throughout the project will be helpful in knowing how much yarn to reserve for the final ribbing and bind off.

Difficulty level: advanced beginner to intermediate

Skills required: cast on, knit, purl, bind off, working in the round on circular needles, decreasing, creating nupps (tips included in the pattern)

Finished size:
Approximately 26-28 inch circumference at bottom edge, 22-24 inch circumference at top edge. The length of the cowl will vary depending on yardage and personal preference. A difference in gauge will affect the overall size of the finished cowl and may require additional yardage.
