Cast on from one small tip, this generously sized asymmetrical shawl grows in ever expanding rows alternating bands of texture and beaded lace. The texture is easy to work and allows the beautiful gradient yarn to shine through. Just when you might be getting bored with the simple knitting the beaded lace arrives to engage your interest.

By using a complementary contrast skein for the lace a field is created upon which the dazzling mixture of beads can sparkle. The two different sections of the shawl are tied together by choosing a mixture of beads that reflect the colors found in the gradient.

The shawls as pictured are in three different bases from The Unique Sheep. The Gradience sets are 6 mini-skeins at 25 g per mini-skein. These colors are available in kits with the beads exclusively from earthfaire.com

  • The Yellow/Orange/ Teal is Verve; 100% Merino, 400 yards/100 g (color names Chimera & Naiad).
  • The Blue/Purple/Charcoal is in Luxe; 25% Silk/75% Merino, 400 yards/100g (color names Arda & Vulcan).
  • The Pink/Green/Mauve is in Tinsel Toes; 50% Superwash Merino/50% Tencel 368 yards/100 g (color names Slyph & Persephone).

The texture portion of the shawl is quite easy with the lace adding to the complexity. Lace skills required are YO, ssk, k2tog, s1-k2tog-psso, and central double decreases. The instructions for the lace are provided in chart form only.

If you would like to see the shawls in action I have made a pattern tour video that you can watch on my YouTube channel Watch Barbara Knit.

The beads are applied with a tiny crochet hook. If you have never done this it is super easy and I have made a video to show you how.

The pattern requires 904 size 6/0 beads (~75 g).
