“The old Moon in the new Moon’s arms” or “the ghostly image of the moon between the horns of the crescent moon”. These poetic phrases describe the phenomena of Earthshine. During a crescent moon, it is the sun that fills the moon with brilliant light. But, it is the pale light reflected off the Earth that gives the rest of the moon a ghostly glow, called Earthshine.

The Earthshine Shawlette explores the themes of reflection and release, as the distinctive elongated caliper cables and columns of dropped stitches are worked. The top portion of the crescent features delicate eyelet lace columns, suggestive of Earth’s faint shine on the moon’s surface. The Earthshine Shawlette makes a beautiful accessory for cool evenings and early mornings; perfect for viewing nature’s phenomena.

This pattern has been test knit and tech edited.

Skills Needed: K2tog, ssk, ktbl, ptbl, p2tog, slipping stitches, cables without cable needle (instructions provided), elongated st (instructions provided), long tail cast on, knitted cast on (instructions provided) two-stitch I-cord bind off (instructions provided).

Construction
The Earthshine Shawlette features a crescent shape that is knit flat from the bottom up. The elongated caliper cable border is easy to memorize after a couple of rows. Select knit stitches are then dropped down to the cast on edge, before the shawl shaping and eyelet lace sections are worked. A two-stitch I-cord bind off provides a decorative, yet firm edge which maintains the crescent shape and makes blocking easier. Instructions are written for working without a cable needle and the two-stitch I-cord bind off. Written instructions, a chart, and schematic are included. To help you keep track, a stitch count tracker for the short row shaping section is also provided.

Materials & info
Yarn Used: Primrose Yarn Co. Jasper (100% Merino Superwash, 3-ply DK, 247 yards/226 m per skein); sample shown uses 2 skeins of color Sassy.

Yardage: 385 - 471 yds; 352 - 431 m.

Needles: US #7 (4.5 mm) is recommended or size to obtain gauge. 32” (80 cm) circular needle.

Gauge: 11.5 st x 22 rows = 4”/10 cm in swatch pattern, blocked and worked flat; (instructions provided for swatch), Eyelet Lace Gauge 17 st x 24 rows, 4”/10 cm blocked and worked flat. A different gauge will affect drape, yardage required, and size.
Size: Wingspan 46” (117 cm); Depth at widest point 16” (40.5 cm).

Notions Required: Tapestry needle, 20 stitch markers.
