Make an ecofriendly fashion statement with this beautiful cowl made in recycled banana yarn.
It works up super fast and delivers a stunningly gorgeous beautiful scarf that’s both lovely to wear and has a unique eyecatching slubby texture.
Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate due to the yarn. Knowledge of how to do foundation double crochet (it is explained in the pattern with a video on blog post too) along with basic crochet stitches is needed.
Recycled Banana yarn is soft and silky with a slightly heavy feel to it. This makes this scarf feel lovely to wear and catches attention with it’s beautiful and unusual look.
There are various sellers of this kind of yarn (see my Banana Yarn review post) and they’re all made by women’s co-operatives in very poor communities so in buying this yarn you really do make a positive difference.
It can be a little tricky to work with as it is uneven in thickness throughout the skein, as is recycled silk yarn (an alternative choice). Gauge is very important and you should work with a loose tension to get even stitches and create a light airy feeling cowl using the amount of yarn suggested. You’ll use more yarn and have a denser fabric if you don’t match gauge.
if you don’t want to use this kind of yarn, you could substitute with any #5 bulky (UK chunky) weight yarn with additional stitches (instructions are included for using this type of yarn, with a revised stitch count in the PDF version of the pattern). The overall look will be a little different without the texture of banana yarn but it will make a lovely and very easy cowl.
