Easy Fern Toe-Up Sock
The feminine lacework pattern on the instep and
leg of this toe-up sock looks complicated, but is
accomplished with simple yo, ssk, and k2tog.
Sock has a short row heel; cuff is worked in
braided ribbing; and side leg has faggot stitch
insert.
Instructions include options for rounded or
tapered toe, generic or calculated foot length, and
Russian or Picot bind off.
SIZING
Small: 62 sts, sock circumference ball of foot 5.5 inches
(14.0 cm) generic length 8.75 inches (22.2 cm), shoe size
US 6-7 (EU 35-36).
Medium: 70 sts, sock circumference ball of foot 6.5 inches
(16.5 cm), length 9.25 inches (23.5 cm), shoe size US
7.5-8.5 (EU 38-39). shoe.
Large: 78 sts., sock circumference ball of foot 7.5 inches
(19.1 cm), arch 8 inches (20.3 cm), generic length 10.0
inches (25.4 cm), shoe size 9-9.5 (EU 40-41).
Note This sock has a snug fit with minimal stretch and
about 10% negative ease. If in doubt, size up. For more
ease, increase needle size or size up.
MATERIALS
Yarn: About 150 g of Medium Weight fingering sock yarn. Sample made with Orange Flower, 437 yds (400 m)/100 g, 100% SW merino, color Crocus.
Needles: Two, 24” (40 cm) circular needles size US 0 (2.0
mm or needles of choice to obtain gauge.
Other: Three closed stitch markers, darning needle, cable
needle.
GAUGE
9.5 stitches/13 rows per inch (3.7 stitches/5.1 rows per cm)
in round in stockinette with needle size US 0 (2.0 mm) and
medium fingering wt yarn. Adjust needle size and/or yarn
weight to obtain gauge or sock size.
DIFFICULTY- Intermediate
Instructions written from the perspective of right-handed,
English style knitter using 2 circular needles. Pattern
assumes sock knitting, lace knitting, and chart reading
experience. References provided for most techniques.
