I created this motif to use as part of larger freeform projects. Pictures 2 and 3 show how the motif (in different shades of blue) has been incorporated into two different purses (not included as part of the listing). The motif itself measures 4.75” X 3.25” and could potentially be used as anything from a project embellishment to component of a large freeform project (i.e. purse, pillow, hat, sweater). The stitches and the shapes are quite versatile. They would be easy to modify as well as work into a larger project. It has good texture but not so much that it couldn’t be worked into a hat or coat. This is one of my favorite motifs. Its big enough to get noticed but small enough that it doesn’t take over a project.

Although an intermediate familiarity with crochet is suggested this would be a great introduction to freeform. Its small and only uses two colors of yarn. I use common stitches but in a slightly unconventional manner. I also include some general information about freeform, explanations of why I do certain things, and ideas for creating your own motifs. This tutorial is 17 pages and has 37 full-color photos.

Since the tutorial focuses on freeform techniques and not so much on learning individual stitches I include only a hyperlink to tutorials for the two following advanced stitches/techniques. The st hdc is only used once and could be replaced with a ch 2 with minimal impact on the final appearance. The kn st, on the other hand, is used extensively and is vital to the construction but this is a great chance to practice a commonly used freeform st.

• Knurl/Crab/Reverse sc/Corded ridge Stitch
• Standing hdc

I used the following acrylic worsted weight yarn available from Hobby Lobby:

• Yarn Bee – Soft Secret (96-Navy)
• Yarn Bee – Soft Secret (12-White)

Size E, G, H, & I Aluminum crochet hooks (or sizes necessary to produce the desired result):
Small yarn needle
Scissors
Handheld garment steamer (optional)

If you have any questions please don’t be shy. I love talking about freeform (or just about any other type of crochet). I have all sorts of interesting resources stashed on my computer. Its amazing what can be learned from the asking of a simple question (by both the person asking and the person being asked).
